Looking for something different than your usual fishing trip? Captain Jason Toombs has got you covered with a private 4-hour night bowfishing adventure that'll have you hooked from the first shot. Based out of Lafitte, Louisiana, this top-rated charter takes you into the dark waters where alligator gar, channel catfish, and other inshore species come alive under bright LED lights. It's just you and up to two buddies working these productive waters, learning to combine archery skills with fishing instincts for a hunt that's unlike anything you've done before.
When the sun goes down in Lafitte, that's when the real action starts. Captain Jason sets you up with everything you need – quality bows equipped with AMS bottle reels that make arrow retrieval smooth and hassle-free. Those powerful LED lights transform the nighttime marsh into a clear underwater world where you can spot your targets moving through the shallows. This isn't about casting lines and waiting – you're actively hunting, bow in hand, watching the water for that perfect shot opportunity. The whole experience runs four hours, giving you plenty of time to get comfortable with the gear and find your rhythm. Best part? Jason handles all the fish cleaning and bagging so you can take your catch home ready for the table. Just bring your Louisiana fishing license (you can grab one online if you forgot), and Captain Jason provides bottled water throughout the trip. Feel free to bring some beer or wine if you want – just keep it to moderate amounts and no hard liquor or glass containers on the boat.
The beauty of bowfishing lies in the simplicity – it's archery meets fishing with immediate results. These AMS bottle reels are game-changers, letting you shoot without worrying about tangled line or losing arrows in the mud. The setup feels natural if you've ever used a bow, but even complete beginners pick it up fast with Captain Jason's coaching. Those LED lights mounted on the boat create an underwater spotlight effect, making fish easy to spot as they cruise through the shallows. You'll learn to account for light refraction – aim low because fish appear higher in the water than they actually are. The key is patience and quick reflexes. Unlike regular fishing where you wait for bites, bowfishing keeps you alert and engaged every minute. You're scanning the water, tracking movement, and taking shots when opportunities present themselves. The Louisiana marsh environment is perfect for this style of hunting, with its shallow flats and abundant rough fish populations that thrive in these brackish waters.
"Had a great time with Jason and his some last weekend! Had lots of opportunities and missed more than I want to admit. Jason was a great guide and kept us on fish and his sone was ready and waiting to get them off the arrow(or the arrow out of the mud. Lol)" - Casey. "One the best experiences I have ever been on. I highly recommend taking this tour. Jason is very experienced and knowledgeable about the fish, gators, boats, and more. I know how to use a bow to fish now and what to look for.I look forward to doing this again." - Britt. "We had a BLAST on our Bowfishing Charter with Toombs Adventures!! Jason and Marcus truly went above and beyond. They did a great job of putting us on fish, despite the murky waters. They were readily available to help us with our bows and give us pointers. They made the atmosphere so fun and enjoyable. We are hooked and will definitely be back for more!! We had so much fun!" - Brittany Cole.
Alligator gar are the crown jewel of Louisiana bowfishing – these prehistoric beasts can stretch over six feet and provide the kind of fight that'll test your gear and your nerves. They're most active during warmer months and love cruising the shallows at night, making them perfect targets under the lights. What makes gar so exciting is their size and the challenge they present. These fish have been around since the dinosaurs, sporting armor-like scales and powerful jaws filled with sharp teeth. When you connect with a big gar, you'll know it immediately.
Channel catfish offer consistent action throughout the year and make excellent table fare. These whisker-faced fighters typically run 2-8 pounds in these waters and are surprisingly active at night. They're drawn to the boat lights, often swimming right into your shooting zone. Catfish are great for beginners because they move predictably and present good-sized targets. Plus, they're some of the best eating you'll find in Louisiana waters.
Common carp might not win beauty contests, but they're absolute bulldogs when you stick them with an arrow. These bronze-colored fish can grow massive in Louisiana's nutrient-rich waters, with 10-20 pounders being common. They're smart fish that spook easily, so you'll need to be ready when they cruise within range. Carp fight hard and test your equipment, making them a customer favorite for the pure sport of it.
Redfish occasionally show up in the mix, especially when you're working areas where salt and fresh water meet. These copper-colored bruisers are Louisiana icons, and landing one with a bow adds serious bragging rights to your trip. They're typically most active during spring and fall months.
Sheepshead round out the target species list, bringing their distinctive black stripes and stubborn fighting style to the party. They're structure-oriented fish, so you'll often find them around docks, pilings, and other underwater features in the area.
This world-class bowfishing experience combines the best of Louisiana's marsh environment with the excitement of archery hunting. Captain Jason's got the local knowledge, quality equipment, and teaching skills to make your night on the water both productive

Alligator gar are the prehistoric monsters everyone wants to see. These armored giants can stretch 4-6 feet and weigh over 100 pounds - pure muscle with a mouth full of needle teeth. They cruise shallow backwaters, bayous, and river bends, often rolling at the surface to breathe air. Late summer during hot, dry spells is when they're most active and easiest to spot. What gets people fired up is the sheer size and that dinosaur look with those bone-like scales. They're ambush predators that can snatch birds right off the surface. The fight is powerful but short bursts rather than long runs. Remember, these are catch-and-release only - illegal to keep. Best bowfishing tip: aim low because they're deeper than they look, and be ready for them to thrash hard when stuck.

Channel catfish are perfect for bowfishing because they're active at night and easy to spot with our LED lights. These whiskered fighters typically weigh 2-15 pounds, though we've arrowed some pushing 30. They cruise the bottom in deeper channels and around structure, but move shallow at night to feed. Their whole body is covered in taste buds, so they can smell food from way off. Summer nights are prime time when water temps are warm and they're most active. What makes them great targets is they're not spooky like some fish - they'll hold steady for a good shot. Plus, they're tough fighters that won't quit even after you stick them. The meat is firm and mild when cleaned right. Here's the trick: look for them cruising just under the surface in the light beams, moving slow and steady.

Common carp are thick-bodied fighters that'll test your equipment. These golden-brown fish average 15-30 inches and 10-25 pounds, with some pushing 40 pounds in our waters. They cruise shallow flats at night, rooting around muddy bottoms for crawfish and plants. You'll spot them by the mud clouds they stir up while feeding. Spring and fall are best when they school up in the shallows to spawn and feed heavy. What makes them fun targets is they're tough fighters that don't give up easy, plus they're not spooky like some species. Since they're invasive here, you're doing the ecosystem a favor by removing them. The meat is actually decent if prepared right. Pro tip: look for the mud trails and bubbles they create while feeding - that's your shot opportunity right there.

Redfish are the bread and butter of shallow water fishing around here. These copper-colored beauties with the black eyespot near their tail typically run 20-30 inches, but we see plenty in the 35-inch range. They love super shallow flats, sometimes so skinny their backs stick out of the water. Look for them around grass beds, oyster reefs, and muddy bottoms where they root around for crabs and shrimp. Fall and spring are prime time when they school up and feed aggressive. What guests love most is the explosive topwater strikes - nothing beats watching a big red blow up on a surface plug. The fight is strong and steady, and the table fare is top-notch with that mild, sweet flavor. My tip: watch for wakes and tails in ankle-deep water, especially during moving tides.

Sheepshead are easy to spot with their gray bodies and dark prison stripes - that's why folks call them convict fish. These guys run 1-8 pounds typically, but you might hook into a 20-pounder if you're lucky. They hang around any structure they can find - docks, pilings, oil rigs, anywhere with barnacles to munch on. Those human-like teeth aren't just for show; they crush shellfish all day long. Spring through fall gives you the best action when they're feeding heavy. What makes them fun is they're notorious bait thieves - they'll nibble and pick at your hook like little criminals. The meat is sweet and flaky, worth the effort to clean around those tough scales. Pro tip: scrape some barnacles off the pilings first to get them fired up and feeding.
