Alligator Gar: These prehistoric-looking monsters are the crown jewels of bowfishing in Lafitte. Growing up to 8 feet long and weighing over 300 pounds, alligator gar are like living dinosaurs. They often cruise near the surface, making them prime targets for bowfishers. Spring and early summer are peak seasons when these giants move into shallow spawning areas. Landing one of these beasts is a true test of skill and strength – it's you versus a fish that's been perfecting its survival game for millions of years.
Channel Catfish: Don't let their whiskered faces fool you; channel cats can be feisty opponents on the end of an arrow. These bottom-dwellers often venture into shallower waters at night to feed, making them accessible targets for bowfishers. They average 2-4 pounds but can grow much larger. The real challenge with catfish is their quick movements – they can change direction in a flash, keeping you on your toes all night.
Common Carp: Carp might not win any beauty contests, but they're a blast to bowfish. These invasive species are everywhere in Louisiana waters, which means more action for you. They're known for their "tailing" behavior, where they stick their tails out of the water while feeding on the bottom. This makes them perfect targets for beginners looking to hone their skills. Plus, removing carp helps the local ecosystem, so you can feel good about every fish you arrow.
Redfish: While not as common a target for bowfishing as gar or carp, redfish can provide an exciting challenge when conditions are right. These copper-colored bruisers are known for their strength and stamina. Spotting their distinctive black spot near the tail can give you a split-second advantage when taking your shot. Redfish are most active in the cooler months, so a fall or winter trip might be your best bet for adding one to your bowfishing bucket list.
Sheepshead: With their human-like teeth and zebra stripes, sheepshead are some of the oddest-looking fish you'll encounter. They're typically found around structure like pilings or oyster beds, which can make for some tricky shooting. Sheepshead are masters of camouflage, blending in with their surroundings, so keep your eyes peeled for any unusual movement in the water. These fish are prized for their tasty white meat, making them a delicious bonus to your night's haul.
Night bowfishing with Captain Jason Toombs isn't just a fishing trip – it's a full-on Louisiana adventure. You'll be swapping stories, honing your aim, and experiencing the bayou in a way few others ever do. With all the gear provided and fish cleaning included, all you need to bring is your sense of adventure and maybe a camera to capture the moment you arrow your first monster gar. Alligator gar are prehistoric-looking monsters that'll get your heart racing. These armor-plated beasts can top 7 feet long and 200+ pounds. You'll find them in backwaters and bayous, often near the surface. Late summer is prime time when water levels drop. Gar hunting is a unique challenge - we use heavy gear and shoot them with specialized arrows. It takes patience to wait for a good shot. Once hit, hang on tight! Big gar fight like crazy and can snap lines or break arrows. Getting them in the boat is half the battle. Watch those teeth when handling them. While not great eating, gar are an awesome trophy and quite the adventure to pursue.
Channel cats are hard-fighting bottom feeders that'll test your gear. They average 2-4 pounds but 20+ pounders aren't uncommon. You'll find them in deeper holes of rivers and lakes, often near structure. Summer nights are prime time - these whiskered fish feed actively after dark. Catfish aren't picky eaters, but stinkbait, cut bait, or night crawlers are reliable choices. Use a sturdy rod and reel combo spooled with 20-pound test. A slip sinker rig keeps your bait on the bottom where cats feed. Once hooked, channel cats pull hard and don't give up easily. Watch those fins when handling them - they're sharp! For eating, smaller cats under 5 pounds are best. Fried catfish is tough to beat.
Carp are often overlooked, but these bulldogs put up a great fight. They average 5-15 pounds but 30+ pounders aren't rare. Look for them in shallow, weedy areas of lakes and slow rivers. Spring is prime time as they feed heavily before spawning. Carp spook easily, so stealth is key. A simple hair rig with corn or boilies works well. Let it sit on the bottom and wait - carp are wary biters. When one picks up your bait, let it run before setting the hook. Then hold on tight! Carp pull hard and don't tire easily. They're not known for eating, but catch-and-release is a blast. My top tip: Chum the area with corn to draw them in before fishing.
Redfish are one of our most popular inshore targets, and for good reason. These bronze bruisers put up a heck of a fight and taste great on the dinner table. You'll find them in shallow water from 1-4 feet deep, often tailing in grass flats or around oyster bars. Most run 5-10 pounds but big bulls over 20 are possible. Fall is prime time when they school up to spawn. Redfish will hit just about any bait or lure, but it's hard to beat a gold spoon or soft plastic under a popping cork. Watch for their copper color flashing in the shallows or those tell-tale v-wakes. When you see one, make a quiet cast ahead of its path and hold on tight!
Sheepshead are tough fighters with a unique look - those human-like teeth are something else! You'll find them around structures like docks, bridges, and oyster reefs in 5-15 feet of water. They typically run 2-8 pounds but can get up to 20. Spring and fall are prime seasons when water temps are in the 60s-70s. Anglers love targeting sheepshead for their challenging bite and excellent table fare. These clever bait-stealers require patience and finesse. My go-to rig is a small circle hook with a piece of shrimp or fiddler crab. Fish it right up against pilings or structure and wait for that subtle tap. Set the hook fast - sheepshead have tough mouths. The fight is on once you hook up!
